Q

• Nicotinic N- Neural

A

o Location: all autonomic nervous system ganglia and the adrenal medulla
o Response to activation: stimulation of parasympathetic and sympathetic postganglionic nerves and release of epinephrine from the adrenal medulla

Q

• Muscarinic – located on target organs of PNS – activation causes

A

o Location: All parasympathetic target organs
o Responses:
 Eyes: contraction of the ciliary muscle focuses lens for near vision
 Eyes: Contraction of the iris sphincter muscle causes miosis (constriction)
 Heart: Decreased rate
 Lung: constriction of bronchi, promotion of secretions
 Bladder: urine to leave bladder
 GI Tract: salivation, increased gastric secretions, increased intestinal tome and motility, defecation
 Sweat glands: generalized sweating
 Sex organs: erection
 Blood vessels: vasodilation

Q

• Alpha1

A

o Location: Eye
 Response: Contraction of the radial muscle of the iris causes mydriasis – pupil dilation
o Location: Arterioles – skin, viscera, mucous membranes
 Response: constriction
o Location: Veins
 Response: Constriction
o Location: Sex Organs – Male
 Response – Ejaculation
o Location: Bladder
 Response: Contraction of trigone and sphincter – cant pee
