What are solvents?
Aerosols, glue, and gas lighter refills abused by sniffing
What is caffeine?
A mild legal stimulant found in coffee, tea and chocolate etc
What are illegal drugs?
Drugs that harm the body and are illegal to possess, sell or use
What are drugs?
A substance that alters the body and mind.
What are social or recreational drugs?
Drugs that are taken for a “buzz” or a “high”
What are prescribed drugs?
Drugs that a doctor prescribes to a patient based on their symptoms.
What are over the counter drugs?
Drugs that a person can buy from a chemist at their own accord.
When do people take social drugs?
When they are with their friends or in social situations.
Are social drugs legal or illegal?
Alcohol, tobacco - legal
Cannabis, ecstasy, etc. - illegal
What is alcohol?
A depressant chemical.
It makes people intoxicated.
What is cannabis?
A relaxant
It can be taken for pain relief or for a “high”
What is cocaine?
A stimulant.
It is highly addictive
How are drugs classified?
They are classified into groups (A, B and C), based on how dangerous they are.
What are some examples of class A drugs?
Heroin, Cocaine, Ecstasy
What are some examples of class B drugs?
Cannabis and amphetamines
What are some examples of class C drugs?
Anabolic steroids and tranquillisers
What are the punishments for class A drugs?
Max 7 years for possession and life for supply/dealing
What are the punishments for class B drugs?
Max 5 years for possession and 14 years for supply/dealing
What are some punishments for class C drugs?
Max 2 years for possession and 14 years for supply/dealing
What is the timeline for the reclassification of cannabis?
1971 - Classified as a class B drug
2004 - Reclassified as a class C drug
2008 - Reclassified to a class B drug
What are some arguments for cannabis being a class B drug?
It can cause mental health issues
It is a gateway drug - it leads to more serious drugs
It may introduce non-drug users to a dangerous lifestyle
What are some arguments for cannabis being a class C drug?
It is less dangerous than other class B drugs
No worse than alcohol and tobacco
It grows naturally
Taxing it will gain money for the government.
