DSM-5
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders is the product of more than 10 years of effort by hundreds of international experts in all aspects of mental health.
Provocation
when a person is considered to have committed a criminal act partly because of a preceding set of events that might cause a reasonable person to lose self control.
schizophrenia
a chronic brain disorder that affects less than one percent of the U.S. population.
bipolar disorder
a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings
generalized anxiety disorder
is marked by excessive, exaggerated anxiety and worry about everyday life events for no obvious reason.
post traumatic disorder
a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, a terrorist act, war/combat, or rape or who have been threatened with death, sexual violence or serious injury.
post traumatic stress disorder
A disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event.
intermittent explosive disorder
a lesser-known mental disorder marked by episodes of unwarranted anger.
clinical depression
A mental health disorder characterized by persistently depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing significant impairment in daily life.
validation
the action of checking or proving the validity or accuracy of something.
substance abuse
Excessive use of psychoactive drugs, such as alcohol, pain medications, or illegal drugs. It can lead to physical, social, or emotional harm.
substance dependence
a chronic, progressive disease characterized by significant impairment that is directly associated with persistent and excessive use of a psychoactive substance.
non- judgmental
avoiding judgments based on one’s personal and especially moral standards.
paranoia
mental condition characterized by delusions of persecution, unwarranted jealousy, or exaggerated self-importance, typically elaborated into an organized system.
delusion
A belief or altered reality that is persistently held despite evidence or agreement to the contrary, generally in reference to a mental disorder.
hallucination
A perception of having seen, heard, touched, tasted, or smelled something that wasn’t actually there.
empathy
the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, that is, the capacity to place oneself in another’s position.
reasoning
the action of thinking about something in a logical, sensible way
crisis intervention
a short-term management technique designed to reduce potential permanent damage to an individual affected by a crisis.
Anxiolytics
a category of drugs used to prevent anxiety and treat anxiety related to several anxiety disorders
