DSM Schizophrenia
A: 2+ Sx over a one month period
B: Dysfunction in work, relationships or self care
C: Duration of 6 months
D: Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
Schizophrenia criteria A symptoms
- Delusions
- Hallucination
- Disorganised speech
- Grossly disorganised / catatonic behaviour
- Negative symptoms (flattening, alogia, avolution)
What is brief psychotic disorder?
Sudden onset of psychotic symptoms without prodrome duration of less than a month and full recovery
DSM brief psychotic disorder
A: 2+ Sx
B: Duration less than one month
C: Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
Brief psychotic disorder criteria A symptoms
- Delusions
- Hallucination
- Disorganised speech
- Grossly disorganised / catatonic behaviour
DSM schizoaffective disorder
- A period of illness with a major mood disorder concurrent with schizophrenia criteria A symptoms

DSM delusional disorder
A: Presence of 1+ delusions for duration of a month ot more
B: Criterion A for schizophrenia have never been met
C: Other than related to delusion, functioning is not impaired and behaviour is not obviously bizarre
D: If there’s been mood issues, they’re brief relative to the duration of the delusional period
E: Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
DSM Major depressive disorder
A: 5+ Sx
B: Significant distress or impairment
C & D: Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
E: There has never been any hypo/manic episode
MDD criteria A symptoms
- Depressed mood most the day nearly every day
- Anhedonia
- Change in weight
- Change in sleep
- Psychomotor change
- Fatigue or low energy
- Worthlessness/guilt
- Impaired concentraion
- Reccurent thoughts of death/suicide
DSM BPAD 1
A: At least one manic episode
B: Not better explained by another psych disorder
DSM Manic episode
A. 1 week or more of elevated, expansive or irritable mood
B. 3+ Sx
C. Marked impairment, or requiring admission
D. Not attributable to effects of substance or medical condition
Manic/Hypomanic episode citeria B symptoms
- Inflated self esteem or grandiosity
- Decreased need for sleep
- Talkative
- Racing thoughts
- Distractability
- Goal-oriented activity
- Risky behaviour
DSM Hypomanic episode
A. 4 days or more of elevated, expansive or irritable mood
B. 3+ Sx
C. Change in functioning
D. But not severe enough to cause marked impairment
E. Not attributable to effects of substance or medical condition
DSM BPAD II
- Current or past hypomanic episode
- Current or past major depressive episode
DSM GAD
A: Anxiety for 6 months + B: Hard to control C: 3+ Sx D: Distress or impairment E: Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
GAD criteria C Symptoms
- Restlessness
- Fatigued
- Difficulty concentrating
- Irritability
- Muscle tension
- Sleep disturbance
PSTD DSM
A. Trauma B. Reliving Sx C. Avoidance of stimuli D. Change in mood or cognition E. Arousability F. Duration over one month G. Distress or impairment in functioning H. Not attributable to effects of substance or medical condition
“TRAUMA”: Traumatic event, reliving, avoidance, unable to function, mood change & month, arousability.
DSM panic disorder
A. Panic attack, with 4+ Sx
B. Worry about more panic attacks OR their consequences OR avoidance behaviour
C. + D. Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
“PANIC”: Palpitations + other Sx, avoidance, not due to others, implications (concerns about), concern about recurrence

- Palpitations
- Sweating
- Shaking
- SOB
- Feeling of choking
- CP
- N or abdo disress
- Dizzy/lightheaded
- Chills/heat sensation
- Paresthiesas
- Derealisation or depersonalisation
- Fear of losing control
- Fear of dying
OCD DSM
A. Obsessions or compulsions
B. Time consuming or cause distress or impairment in functioning
C & D. Not attributable to other psych, substance or medical condition
Define obsessions:
Recurrent, intrusive thoughts causing distress which the individual attempts to ignore, suppress or neutralise
Define compulsitons
Repetitive behaviours or mental acts aimed at reducing anxiety or preventing some event, but are not realistically connected or are clearly excessive.
Anorexia DSM
A. Restriction of energy intake leading to significantly low BW
B. Intense fear of gaining weight, or behaviour that interferes with weight gain
C. Disturbance experience of body weight OR undue influence of BW on self-evaluations OR lack of recognition of seriousness
Bulemia DSM
A. Recurrent episodes of binge eating
B. Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviour
C. Binging + compensation at least weekly for 3 months
D. Not occurring exclusively during episodes of anorecia
