DT Revision Flashcards
(53 cards)
What are the three parts of a risk assessment?
Hazard, Risk level (low/medium/high), Control measure
What is User-Centred Design?
A strategy that puts the user’s needs and experiences at the heart of the design process.
What is tensile strength?
A material’s resistance to pulling (tension) forces.
How does the bridge knife grip differ from the claw grip?
Bridge: hands form an arch, knife cuts in between; Claw: fingers curled under to safely hold food while cutting.
What does the Eatwell Plate show?
The recommended proportions of different food groups for a balanced diet.
What are macronutrients and micronutrients?
Macronutrients = large amounts (protein, carbs, fat); Micronutrients = small amounts (vitamins, minerals)
What are the steps in the OBSERVE model for product analysis?
Opinion – Because – So What
What’s the difference between a Design Brief and a Design Specification?
Brief = problem to solve; Specification = criteria the design must meet
What is a prototype and why is it used?
A model used to test and improve a design before final production.
What tool should be used with a machine vice and depth stop?
Pillar drill
How should a glue gun be used safely?
Squeeze a small amount, return to stand, treat burns with cold water
What is the purpose of 3D printing in design?
Create physical prototypes from virtual models using melted filament, layer by layer
What are Boolean functions in Tinkercad?
Group and subtract shapes to form custom designs
What does a resistor do?
Reduces current in a circuit; it’s non-polarised
What makes triangles strong in structures?
They distribute tension and compression forces evenly
What are food miles, and why do they matter?
Distance food travels; more miles = higher carbon footprint
What is iterative design?
A make-test-evaluate cycle to improve a product through multiple versions
What cooking method is used in making Béchamel sauce?
Mixing butter, flour, and milk into a smooth white sauce
What is food provenance?
Knowing where food is grown, reared, caught, and how it’s produced and transported
What is a virtual model?
A design made using CAD software to simulate appearance and function
What are two key safety rules in the workshop?
Wear goggles and aprons, keep the workshop tidy.
What does compressive strength mean?
A material’s ability to resist crushing or squeezing forces.
What is destructive testing?
Testing a product or material to the point of failure to assess its limits.
