1
Q

limitation:methodological issues for the model of relationship breakdown.

A

E:most research is retrospective (meaning most research involves self-report method)
E: an issue with self report is it can be vulnerable to social desirability bias, where individuals/participants give accounts that are in favour of themselves, rather than accurate representations.this undermines the validity of research supporting ducks phase model.
L:therefore, the ducks phase model may not have research that is accurately describes how break ups occur in real life.

Q

strength: has real life applications

A

E:for example, duck recommends that during the intra psychic phase partners can be encouraged to focus their thoughts on positive aspects of their partner instead of going over the negative aspects.duck further suggests that improving communication can help address the difficulties in relationships.
E:this can help suggest ways of reversing relationship breakdown.
L:therefore, the ducks model can be of practical use.

Q

limitation: cultural bias

A

E:the model is based on relationships from individualist cultures where breakups and divorce are voluntary
E:this may not be the case in collectivist cultures where relationships may be arranged or have a greater family involvement. this means relationships may be difficult to end in these cultures and the break up process would consequently not follow ducks phases.
L:therefore, ducks model may not be generalisable to all cultures.
