Dumping Syndrome vs. Hiatal Hernia Flashcards
What is HIATAL HERNIA?
The REGURGITATION of ACID that BACKS UP into the ESOPHAGUS
- because upper stomach herniates upward towards the Diaphragm
What is the PROBLEM in HIATAL HERNIA?
Gastric Content MOVES in the WRONG DIRECTION at the CORRECT RATE (Rate is Normal)
What is DUMPING SYNDROME?
COMPLICATION that follows after GASTRIC SURGERY in which Gastric Content DUMP TOO QUICKLY into the DUODENUM.
What is the PROBLEM in DUMPING SYNDROME?
Gastric Content moves in the RIGHT DIRECTION at a WRONG RATE.
What are the S/SX of HIATAL HERNIA?
G.E.R.D. (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease) = Heartburn & Indigestion happens if you LIE DOWN AFTER YOU EAT
What are the S/SX of DUMPING SYNDROME?
Staggering Gait, Slurred Speech, Impaired/Judgement Delayed, Labile Emotions (Cerebral Impairment just like a Drunk) Pale, Cold & Clammy (just like in Shock) Borborygmi, cramping, diarrhea, abdominal pain, guarding, bloating, distension, tenderness (Acute Abd. Distress)
Drunk + Shock = HYPOGLYCEMIA + Acute Abdominal Distress
What do you do with the HEAD of the BED during & after meals in HIATAL HERNIA?
In HIGH POSITION - makes the gravity empty it FASTER
What do you want to do with the amount of FLUIDS we give with the meal in HIATAL HERNIA?
What do you want to give with the CARBOHYDRATES content in HIATAL HERNIA?
How do DUMPING SYNDROME eat their MEALS?
IN LOW POSITION (opposite of Hiatal Hernia)
Head of the Bed FLAT, Turning to their SIDE (eating on their side with the head flat)
When do client get their FLUIDS in DUMPING SYNDROME?
1 HOUR to BEFORE or to AFTER their Meals
How do you want to give the CARBOHYDRATE content in DUMPING SYNDROME?
LOW “When everything is Low the stomach empty Slow”
How do you give CHON in HIATAL HERNIA?
LOW PROTEIN “When CHO is High, CHON is Low”
How do you give PROTEIN in DUMPING SYNDROME?
HIGH PROTEIN “When CHO is Low, CHON is High”
