What is duodenal atresia?
A
Duodenal atresia = malformation of the duodenum
that results in complete bowel obstruction.
Duodenum does not join up with the rest of the small
intestine

Associations?
A
Most common cause of fetal bowel obstruction.
Ass’d w/ Trisomy 21 & other atresias

Presentation?
A
● Projectile vomiting (may be bilious) after 1st feed
● Distension, pain, regurgitation
● Absent bowel movements.
● LBW / premature

Management
A
● NG tube aspiration of stomach contents
● Duodenoduodenostomy procedure

Complications
A
● Polyhydramnios → preterm labour,
preterm rupture ( → infection)
● Malnutrition / Weight loss
● Reflux
