(6 cards)
What are dural venous sinuses?
located at the site of attachment of dural reflections- areas where the meningeal and periosteal layers of the dura mater become separated to form epithelial lined spaces
What is the role of the dural venous sinuses?
These receive CSF from the arachnoid villi and drain venous blood from the brain
Where do the dural venous sinuses drain into?
Internal Jugular Vein
Name the 10 sinuses
superior sagittal sinus straight sinus inferior sagittal sinus cavernous sinus superior petrosal sinus inferior petrosal sinus sigmoid sinus transverse sinus anterior intercavernous sinus posterior intercavernous sinus
Why is flow through the cavernous sinus slow?
It is traversed by a number of trabeculae that give it a sponge-like appearance
What goes through the cavernous sinus? (5 cranial nerves)
Oculomotor nerve Trochlear nerve Opthalmic branch of trigeminal (V) Maxillary branch of trigeminal (V) Internal Carotid artery Abducens nerve (remember OTOM CAT)
