Dynamic equilibrium Flashcards
(12 cards)
what is meant by a reversible reaction?
the products of the reaction can react to produce the original reactants ( forward and backward reaction occur at the same time)
what is the symbol used for a reversible reaction
two half arrows ( ⇌)
what is an example of a reversible reaction?
The Haber process
hydrogen + nitrogen ⇌ ammonia
If the forward is endothermic what type of reaction would the backward be in a reversible reaction?
exothermic
is there a difference in the energy transferred for the forward and backward reaction
No. the same amount of energy is transferred each way
what is meant by dynamic equilibrium
when the forward and backward reaction occur at the same rate.
what conditions should be met in order for a system to reach dynamic equilibrium?
The reaction takes place within a closed system
The concentration of the the reactants and products do not change ( constant)
What is meant by Le Chatelier’s Principle?
If a system is at equilibrium and a change is made to any of the conditions,
then the system responds to counteract the change
what is the effect of increasing concentration of the reactants?
If concentration of reactants is increased: position of equilibrium shifts
towards products so more product is produced until equilibrium is reached
again
What is the effect of increasing concentration of the products?
if concentration of products is increased: position of equilibrium shifts towards
reactants so more reactant is produced until equilibrium is reached again
what happens to the position of equilibrium if the temperature is increased?
If temperature is increased: equilibrium moves in the direction of the
endothermic reaction
what happens to the position of equilibrium If the temperature is decreased?
If temperature is decreased: equilibrium moves in the direction of the
exothermic reaction
