dynamics Flashcards
(12 cards)
What properties do scalars have
ONLY magnitude
what properties do vectors have
they have BOTH magnitude (size) and direction
Examples of vectors
Force, Velocity, Displacement, Acceleration
Examples of Scalars
Speed, Distance, Mass, Time, Energy
Scalar quantities are added and subtracted simply
e.g
If you travel a distance of 500m, then a further distance of 200m, your total distance is 700m
Vector quantities are added differently depending on the directions
if the vectors are going in the same direction, add the magnitudes keep direction
if the vectors are going in the opposite direction, subtract and the direction is the same as the largest
what is acceleration
it’s a measure of the rate of change of velocity
i.e. how much the velocity changes by each second
measured in ms^-2
acceleration equation
a= v-u/t
acceleration- a
v- final velocity
u- initial velocity
t- time
on velocity time graphs upward slope means?
positive acceleration
on a velocity time graphs downward slope means?
negative acceleration
any object in free fall on earth will accelerate initially at?
9.8ms^-2 as the unbalanced force acting will be only weight
as an object accelerates through the atmonsphere the air resistance acting upwards…?
increases
