Dynamics Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is Newton’s First Law of Motion?
A particle remains at rest or continues to move in a straight line if no unbalanced force is acting
What is Newton’s Second Law?
The acceleration of a particle is proportional to the resultant force acting on it and in the direction of the force
What is Newton’s Third Law?
The force of action and reaction between contacting bodies is equal in magnitude, opposite in direction and colinear
What are the steps do drawing a Freebody Diagram?
- Decide which system to isolate
- Isolate chosen system by drawing a diagram which represents its complete external boundary
- Identify all forces that act on the system and represent them in their proper location
- Define a coordinate axis
What is larger, dynamic friction or stiction?
Stiction - harder to get something to move than accelerate it while moving
What is friction proportional to?
The normal force
What is the strategy for tackling connected bodies questions?
- No real fast way / shortcuts
- Draw FBD
- Label forces, define NSL equations for each body
- Apply Newtons 3rd law
- Consider the motion, accelerations not equal
