2
Q

how did the atmosphere change?

A
  • water vapour condensed to form oceans as the earth cooled
  • lots of CO2 dissolved into the oceans, forming carbonate precipitates. these formed sediments on the sea floor.
  • green plants and algae evolved and absorbed some CO2 for photosynthesis

7
Q

what are the effects of global warming?

A
  • polar ice caps will melt and will increase the sea level, which will cause flooding
  • change in climate and weather

8
Q

what is the greenhouse effect?

A

gases in the atmosphere trap heat that would normally be radiated to space

9
Q

what happens in the greenhouse effect?

A

the sunlight that the earth absorbs from the sun can pass through the atmosphere unaffected by the greenhouse gases. this means we can continue to absorb energy at the same rate we used to be lose less, so overall the earth gains energy.

Q

how could we help stop global warming?

A
  • encourage plankton growth in the seas buy dumping scrap iron in it
  • turn carbon dioxide into hydro carbons through electrolysis

16
Q

how did nitrogen form?

A

the suns rays split ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen

17
Q

how come carbon is stored in sedimentary rock?

A

sea creatures used the carbon from the atmosphere to make shells. when they died their fossils were compressed into sedimentary rock.

18
Q

how did fossil fuels form?

A

marine creatures bodies were compressed to form oil
