Megalithic tombs

A
  • Neolithic believed in afterlife, so they built tombs for the death
  • court cairns are the oldest type of tomb, axes and pottery were founded in these tombs
  • dolmens are huge stone tables with a cap stone on top. It weighs over 100 tone and holds up to 22 people
  • passage tombs eg. Newgrange in co. Meath. This tomb is made of stones, it is 19m x 6m, it took from 2675BC-2485BC to build

  • beaker people used metal
  • mount Gabriel Co. Cork, huge fires needed to crack the rock called mining, then separated rock and copper called smelting
  • gold came from Co. Wicklow
  • fulacht fiadh was used to cook meat
  • burial customs were cist graves and wedge tombs
  • Smiths made tools

Mesolithic people 7000BC-3500BC

A

~also called the middle Stone Age
~mount sandle Co. Derry
~huts made with bendy sticks and mud or animal skin
~all tools made from stone( used Flint because it was a hard rock )
~ hunter gatherers- men hunted for meat and women gathered berries and nuts. They mainly ate bore, duck or deer
