Early colonisation Flashcards
(27 cards)
Coloniser perceptions? 3/3
Fear, opportunity and to be saved.
Coloniser perception: Fear
The British and Irish were met with some very unique experiences, they were used to cold, dark and winter January’s. But Australia was the opposite and much different.
Coloniser perception: Opportunity
Because Indigenous Australians lived a nomadic lifestyle, it was easier for settlers to presume that a section of land with no one present was terra nullius.
Coloniser perception: To be saved
Non-Indigenous Australians believed that Australia was ‘wild’ . They believed that they had the right to ‘improve’ the land by farming it, building on it and taming it.
Terra Nullius
Land that belongs to no one, or no mans land.
Nomadic
To move across large distances.
The three early colonisation interactions
Cessation of cultural fire, land clearing and introduction of species
Cessation of cultural fire
The colonists stopped all fire stick farming, which caused the environment to grow rapidly and cause huge fires.
Land clearing
when colonists came they mad everything from wood, they believed that there was an endless supply but instead they cleared homes of fauna and flora.
Introduction of species
Colonists didn’t farm native animals due to fear, and instead brought over their own animals (cattle, sheep and pigs for farming)
The three perceptions of Pre federation
Resources, the environment was in danger and fear
Resources: pre federation
The Australian environment was seen as a place that could bring great fortune, because of the gold found
The environment was in danger: pre federation
Land clearing was happening at a larger scale, with a larger population towns and cities were being built. The land wasn’t being protected.
Fear: pre federation
Most of the people who came during the gold rush was Europeans, North Americans and Chinese settlers and they were mostly scared of the bush.
What are the interactions for pre federation?
machinery, improved working conditions and national parks
Machinery: pre federation
Once machinery was introduced it made timber harvesting, farming and mining easier, which then also allowed people to mine larger areas.
Improved working conditions: pre federation
Labourers successfully campaigned for improved pay and work hours (8 hours). Because of that change it allowed them to spend more time with family and time to appreciate the environment.
National parks: pre federation
The most positive change during this time was national parks, and with more time for people who were working, it gave them something to do with their families.
Land degradation: pre federation
With the increase of population the land is cleared to make space, later then causing salt to rise through the soil making it not good for farming.
Perceptions for post federation
The view of protecting the environment continued, but it was almost drowned out by the eagerness to shape our own nations identity.
Interactions for post federation
land clearing on larger scale, transport and power
Transport: post federation
After the federation all of the states wanted to link all states with a rail system.
Power: post federation
After WWll soldiers worked on constructing dams and hydro electricity plants, One was built in NSW and the other in VIC in the 1940’s and 50’s
Impacts of post federation
Salinity, road to rail and introduced species
