  • St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre - Catholic mob violence directed to Huguneots - forcing them to flee persecution
  • Were given Denizen Status by the monarch - gave them the right to live in England with certain rights of citizenship.

A
  • Mostly welcomed as they looked like them and both Protestants - even created charities for them.
  • A French Protestant Church was opened for them in 1550
  • Were highly skilled craftsworkers - helped economy
  • Some lived in poverty and didn’t lead good lives.

  • Later realised that they were not all protestant and their attitudes changed and became negative

  • Fashion: Silk and other new fabrics by Huguenots
  • Art: Artist such Holbein came from Germany and the Netherlands to paint royalty and other rich people
  • Writing: Polydore Vergil born in Italy wrote one of the first books about English history.
