Huguenots - Reasons for Coming
A
- St Bartholomew’s Day Massacre - Catholic mob violence directed to Huguneots - forcing them to flee persecution
- Were given Denizen Status by the monarch - gave them the right to live in England with certain rights of citizenship.

A
- Mostly welcomed as they looked like them and both Protestants - even created charities for them.
- A French Protestant Church was opened for them in 1550
- Were highly skilled craftsworkers - helped economy
- Some lived in poverty and didn’t lead good lives.

- Spitalfields - highly skilled silk weavers worked
- Cloth Trade boosted
- Invested in the Sheffield steel industry and started the English paper industry.

A
- Mostly Protestant farmers left Germany due to bad harvests, famine, poverty and war.
- Very poor and had few skills apart from farming and labouring
- 12,000 came

- At first Londoners raised 20,000 and welcomed them
- Later realised that they were not all protestant and their attitudes changed and became negative
- Gov deported thousands to Ireland, but about two-thirds came back

- Came back to England in 1656 after Cromwell allowed them to come back.
- Faced persecution in Europe
- English economy was weak and Jewish merchants could help it.

- Were allowed to open a synogogue by authorities
- Worked mainly as bankers, doctors, scholars n jeweller
- Poorer Jews came from Eastern Europe and settled in the arrival ports and worked as dockers, trader, pawnbrokers

- Jewish financers invested in businesses, enabling economic growth.

- West Indian Company
- Ayahs: returned to England with the families they worked for and continued working for them.
- Lascars: Worked on the ships sailing between England and India and many settled in ports

- Depended on their employers
- Ayahs: lived with their families however when the children grew up, they were either passed onto other families or abandoned
- Lascars: Settled in the ports of London, Liverpool, Glasglow, Cardiff and worked on the docks.

- Forced Migration due to the transatlantic slave trade until the abolishment of the slave trade in 1807.

- Brought as servants
- Employed in many skilled jobs such as interpreters, and were paid the same wages as others.
- Some became very wealthy and were treated as equal members of society

- Fashion: Silk and other new fabrics by Huguenots
- Art: Artist such Holbein came from Germany and the Netherlands to paint royalty and other rich people
- Writing: Polydore Vergil born in Italy wrote one of the first books about English history.
