Ears (10.3) Flashcards
(15 cards)
How is sound produced?
By the vibration of objects.
Define frequency.
The number of vibrations per second made by a vibrating object.
What’s the unit of frequency?
Hertz (Hz)
State the relationship between object vibration speed and the frequency of sound.
The faster an object vibrates, the higher the frequency of the sound produced.
How is sound transmitted?
Through the vibrations of particles in the media.
Sound must travel through what? What states it can be?
A medium. Solid, liquid, or gas.
Photo Question: Ear Parts
What’s the use of pinna?
It collects sound from the surroundings and directs the sound into the ear canal.
How does sound affect the eardrum? What happens next?
The sound causes the eardrum to vibrate. These vibrations are transmitted to the ear bones.
What’s the use of three ear bones?
They amplify the vibrations of the eardrum and transmit them to the inner ear.
What’s inside the cochlea?
Sensory hair cells.
What’s the use of sensory hair cells?
Detect vibrations and produce signals.
What’s the use of auditory nerve?
The signals are sent through the auditory nerve to the brain.
What’s the audible frequency range of humans?
20Hz-20000Hz
What’s the unit of sound level? How can we measure it?
Decibel (dB), decibel meter.
