Earth Basics Flashcards
(100 cards)
What is the Earth’s Structure?
The layers of Earth including the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core
What is the Crust?
The outermost layer of Earth made of solid rock.
What is the Mantle?
The thick layer of semi-solid rock beneath the crust.
What is the Core?
The innermost layer of Earth consisting of the outer liquid core and the solid inner core.
What is Plate Tectonics?
The theory that Earth’s lithosphere is divided into tectonic plates that move and interact.
What are Tectonic Plates?
Large sections of Earth’s crust that move due to convection currents in the mantle.
What is a Convergent Boundary?
A boundary where two tectonic plates collide often forming mountains or causing earthquakes.
What is a Divergent Boundary?
A boundary where two tectonic plates move apart leading to the formation of new crust.
What is a Transform Boundary?
A boundary where two tectonic plates slide past each other causing earthquakes.
What is a Fault?
A crack or fracture in Earth’s crust where movement has occurred.
What is a Volcano?
A vent in Earth’s crust through which molten rock ash
What is an Earthquake?
A sudden shaking of the ground caused by the release of energy along a fault.
What is the Richter Scale?
A scale used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes.
What is the Focus of an Earthquake?
The point within Earth where the earthquake originates.
What is the Epicenter?
The point on Earth’s surface directly above the focus of an earthquake.
What is a Tsunami?
A series of large ocean waves caused by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
What is the Rock Cycle?
The continuous process by which rocks are formed altered
What is Igneous Rock?
Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of molten magma or lava.
What is Sedimentary Rock?
Rock formed from the compression of sediments over time.
What is Metamorphic Rock?
Rock formed when existing rocks are subjected to heat and pressure.
What is the Water Cycle?
The continuous movement of water on above
What is Evaporation?
The process by which liquid water turns into vapor and rises into the atmosphere.
What is Condensation?
The process by which water vapor cools and turns back into liquid water.
What is Precipitation?
Water released from clouds in the form of rain snow
