Earth & human activity Flashcards
Science (19 cards)
environment, changes/alter, beneficial, harmful, survive, organism, habitat
Environment
things that were once natural on Earth are now different or getting different because of what humans do
Changes/alter
actions that are good for the planet and its creatures, like planting trees, using less water, or recycling, which helps keep the Earth healthy and safe for everyone
Beneficial
air pollution, water pollution, and climate change.
Harmful
what living things, including humans, need to stay alive and healthy on Earth. These include things like food, water, a safe place to live, and a way to protect themselves from harm.
Survive
any living thing, from the smallest bacteria to the humongous blue whale (a living thing that can function independently)
Organism
a place where plants and animals live, offering everything they need to survive, like food, water, shelter, and space
Habitat
using things wisely and taking care of them so that they don’t run out, like saving water or recycling.
Conserve
to keep things safe, like plants, animals, and the environment, from being harmed or destroyed by people.
Preserve
learning to change what you do or how you live to better fit in with your environment and stay safe.
adapt
how people think, feel, and act, and how their actions impact the planet, including things like how they use resources, create pollution, or interact with the environment
behavior
taking things we’re done with (like plastic bottles or paper) and turning them into new things, helping keep Earth clean and have more resources
recycling
a native species is like a plant or animal that belongs to an area because it grew there naturally, without humans helping it get there.
Native species
a depressed area in the landscape that collects rain water from a roof, driveway or street and allows it to soak into the ground
Rain gardens
when a lot of water overflows onto land that is normally dry
Flooding
the Earth’s surface slowly wears away and gets moved around by natural forces like water, wind, and ice
Erosion
cutting down or clearing trees from large areas of forest, often to make space for farms, towns, or other human activities, which can harm the environment and the animals that live there
deforestation
everything around us, including living things (plants and animals) and non-living things (air, water, soil, and rocks
