Earth's Interior Flashcards
(19 cards)
Earth is composed of four distinct layers
the inner core, the outer core, the mantle and the crust.
Direct evidence
from rock samples drilled from deep inside Earth
Oceanic crust consists mostly of ?
basalt
Continental crust, consists mainly of ?
granite
The Mantle
The mostly-solid bulk, made of hot rock.
lies between Earth’s dense, super-heated core and the thin outer layer, the crust.
Upper mantle: mostly solid, Made of the:
Lithosphere
Asthenosphere
Indirect evidence
from seismic waves produced by earthquakes allow scientists to measure the speed in which they travel
Lower mantle
The lower mantle is hotter and denser extends to Earth’s core.
The Core Made mostly of?
metals iron and nickel
Outer core
layer of molten metal
Inner core
dense ball of solid metal due to high pressure form other layers
Movement of? creates earth’s magnetic field.
Movement of liquid outer core
Radiation:
The transfer of energy through empty space; has no direct contact between heat source and an object.
Conduction
transfer of heat energy by direct contact of particles of matter.
Convection
Transfer of heat by the movement of a heated fluid (includes liquids and gases).
caused by differences in temperature and density within a fluid.
Convection Currents
Flow in the mantle – heat source core and the mantle itself.
These currents have been acting like a conveyor belt moving the lithosphere
Cause:
Convection currents are caused by internal thermal energy. The mantle is heated, less dense and rises. gets closer to crust it cools, becoming denser, sinking forming a current.
Effect
The convection current acts like ‘conveyor belt’ moving plates of the lithosphere
Result:
The result of plates moving are earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and building of mountains.
