EARTH SCIE Flashcards
(66 cards)
is the study of the Eart’s structure, properties, processes, and four and a half billion years of biotic evolution.
EARTH SCIENCE
is the study of the origin, history, and structure of the Earth.
GEOLOGY
is the sciences of the atmosphere and its phenomena (the study of the weather), includes the study of weather patterns, clouds, hurricanes, and tomatoes.
Meteorology
is the study of outer space and the physical bodies beyond the Earth
ASTRONOMY
The main concern of the Solar nebular Theory(SNT) is to solve the original problems of Kant and Laplace’s nebular hypothesis about angular momentum of the sun.
SOLAR NEBULAR HYPOTHEIS
Also called as geosphere; it is the Earth’s solid surface, often called the crust of the Earth.
Includes the Earth’s interior, rocks and minerals, landforms and the processes that shape the Earth’s surface.
LITHOSPHERE
The liquid water component of the Earth.
-It includes the ocean, seas, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams.
-It covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth and is the home for many plants and animals.
HYDROSPHERE
The solidifies water found on Earth’s surface in known as
CRYOSPHERE
Is a gaseous sphere and it envelopes the Earth. It consists of a mixture of gases composed primarily of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and water vapor.
ATMOSPHERE
Lowest and thinnest layer; where weather occurs
TROPOSPHERE
Contains high level of ozone; ozone layer
STRATOSPHERE
Protects the Earth from large meteoroids
MESOSPHERE
Absorbs the sun’s radiations, making it the hottest layer.
THERMOSPHERE
The biological component of the Earth systems.
-Includes all life on Earth, including man, and all living organism together with the dead organic matter products by them.
Biosphere
a natural occurring, inorganic crystalline solid element or compound composed of an ordered arrangement of atoms with a specific chemical composition.
MINERAL
-Used to describe how light is reflected from the surface of a mineral.
-Metallic luster is opaque and very reflective like gold and silver.
-Nonmetallic luster is dull, silky, greasy, and pearly like silicates.
LUSTER
-A measure of the resistance of a mineral to being scratched. Moh’s scale is used to measure the hardness of a mineral consists of 10 minerals arranged from hardest to softest.
HARDNESS
-The least used property in determining what mineral is present in rock.
COLOR
the color of a mineral in its powdered form
Streak
-Visible expression of a mineral’s internal arrangement of atoms.
Crystalline Structure
three dimensions of mineral have about the same length, like that of a cube or sphere.
Equant
forms prismatic or prism-like crystal (like plate)
Elongate
The tendency of a mineral to cleave, or break, along flat, even surfaces.
-Biotite and mica have one direction, orthoclase has two direction, galena has three directions and fluorite has four directions.
Cleavage
