Earthquake, Seismic Waves, Intensity Flashcards
(10 cards)
A fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock.
Fault
A sudden release of energy due to stress accumulation along faults.
Earthquake
Large sea waves caused by underwater earthquakes or other disturbances.
Tsunami
Measure of how much an area was shaken during an earthquake; felt by people.
Intensity
Total amount of energy released at the earthquake’s focus.
Magnitude
Instrument used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes.
Richter Scale
Fast seismic waves that travel through both solid and liquid layers.
P-waves (Primary Waves)
Slower seismic waves that can only travel through solid layers.
S-waves (Secondary Waves)
Waves produced by the sudden breaking of rock within the earth, causing earthquakes.
Seismic Waves
Agency responsible for monitoring volcanic and seismic activities in the Philippines.
