Earthquakes Flashcards

1
Q

How do earthquakes happen at destructive plate boundaries?

A

As the oceanic plate subducts under the continental plate, there is a buildup of stress and friction, which can cause an earthquake

Q

How do earthquakes happen at constructive plate boundaries?

A

When the two tectonic plates move apart, the movement of the plates over the mantle can cause earthquakes

Q

How do earthquakes happen at conservative plate boundaries?

A

When the plates begin to slide against each other, they get stuck and pressure builds up and when the pressure is released, it sends out huge amounts of energy, causing an earthquake.

Q

What are some primary impacts of earthquakes?

A

Bridges/buildings collapsing, deaths/injuries, electricity cables damaged, roads/railways/airports damages, underground water/sewage pipes damaged- can cause leaks and cut of supplies

Q

What are some secondary impacts of earthquakes?

A

Landslides, tsunamis, homelessness, shortage of clean water/sanitation- lead to illnesses, unemployment from damaged buildings, expensive to repair everything

Q

How can we reduce damage from earthquakes?

A

LICS can get aid from other countries to support them- not very sustainable as it is expensive

Earthquake proof buildings-less deaths

Planning

Education

Try to get better at predicting earthquakes

Q

Why do people live in these areas?

A

Born there/lived there their whole life

protection from earthquakes from government is good

Do not think another earthquake will happen again (naivety)

May not have the money to move to a different area
