EarthSci (Universe, Solar System & Earth) Flashcards
(28 cards)
This explains why natural phenomena occurs
Scientific Theory
This summarizes a set of observations about natural phenomena
Scientific Law
This is one of the beliefs about the origin of the universe which explains that God created the universe in 6 days
Divine Creation
This is a compact point where all the matter and energy in the universe are crammed into
Singularity
A long-range force that binds atoms which can either be attractive or repulsive
Electromagnetic Force
A weak, long-ranged force that binds the Solar System
Gravitational Force
This theory states that matter is constantly created as the universe expands, the universe is getting filled up with particles/matter instead of spreading apart like the big bang.
Steady State Model
This offers solution to unresolved problems of big bang such as flatness, monopoles and horizon
Inflation Theory
A particle carrying the force of gravity
Graviton
It uses the general theory of relativity and principles of quantum mechanics
String Theory
developed by Everett and DeWitt
Many Worlds
Who developed the term “Many Worlds”?
Everett and DeWitt
Suggests that the planets were formed by the collision of the sun with the giant comet. Resulting in debris forming into planets that rotate in the same direction as they revolve around the sun.
Buffon’s Collision Theory
This implies that the speeding massive star passed near the sun, it pulled off materials due to gravitational attraction. The torn-off material subsequently condensed to form the planets.
Jeans-Jeffreys Tidal Theory
Great cloud of gas and dust, called a nebula, collapsed because of gravitational pull. The spinning cloud flattens into a pancake-shaped object with a bulge at the centre (Sun). Local regions contract on their own and later on became the planets
Kant-Laplace Nebular Theory
Theory that does not support the steady state model
Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy,
Solar system was formed into bodies with nearly circular orbits because of whirlpool-like motion in the pre-solar materials.
Descartes’ Vortex Theory
These are handed down from generation to generation through oral traditions such as stories, poems, and songs.
Creation Myth
Due to random fluctuation in an empty void, there was a great explosion or expansion—the blast sent space, time, matter, and energy in all directions.
Big Bang Theory
Who proposed the big bang theory?
Alexander Friedman and Georges Lemaitre
attempt to describe all forces, except gravity, in a single framework. It says that three forces - electromagnetic, weak and strong forces - were once combined into a single force.
Grand Unified Theories
short range attractive force which binds the nucleus.
Strong Nuclear Force
short ranged force present in radioactive decay
Weak Nuclear Force
Earth’s sphere composed of life?
Biosphere
