ecology Flashcards
(27 cards)
relating to or resulting from living things, especially in their ecological relations.
Biotic
besmirches the nonliving part of the environment, including water, rocks, light, and temperature.
Abiotic
a particular section, group, or type of people or animals living in an area or country.
Population
an interacting group of various species in a common location.
Community
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
Ecosystem
the part of earth where life exists
Biosphere
an organism that eats only plants
Herbivore
an organsim that eats animals.
Carnivore
an organism that eats both plants and animals.
Omnivore
the pathway of energy transfers thought various stages as a result of the feeding patters of a series of organsims.
Food chain
a digram that shows the feeding relationships between organsims in an ecosyteam.
Food web
a triangular diagram that shows and ecosysteam’s loss of energy which results as energy passes thought the ecosystem’s food chain
Energy pyramid
the largest population that an environment can support at any given time.
Carrying capacity
an organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
Prey
an animal that naturally preys on others.
Predator
symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved.
Mutualism
: commensalism
Commensalism
the practice of living as a parasite in or on another organism.
Parasitism
an organism that produces organic compounds from simple substances such as water and carbon dioxide; an autotroph
Producers
an organism, especially a soil bacterium, fungus, or invertebrate, that decomposes organic material.
Decomposers
a barren area of landscape where little precipitation occurs and, consequently, living conditions are hostile for plant and animal life.
Desert
treeless regions found in the Arctic and on the tops of mountains, where the climate is cold and windy, and rainfall is scant.
Tundra
a biome that is always changing.
Temperate deciduous forest
very high annual rainfall, high average temperatures, nutrient-poor soil, and high levels of biodiversity (species richness).
Tropical rainforest
