Ecology Flashcards
(28 cards)
Ecology
The study of interactions between living and non-living things.
Biosphere
The portion of Earth that supports life.
Primary Producer
All of the green plants and other organisms that produce their own food in an ecosystem.
Population
Individual organisms of a single species that share the same geographic location at the same time.
Ecosystem
A biological community, such as the coral reef, and all of the abiotic factors, such as the sea water, that effected it make up an ecosystem.
Biotic factor
The living factors in an organisms environment.
Abiotic Factor
The nonliving factors in an organisms environment.
Food chain
A simple model that shows how energy flows through an ecosystem.
Food web
A model representing the many interconnected food chains and pathways in which energy flows thrugh a group of organisms.
Detritivore
Organisms who eat fragments of dead matter in an ecosystem that return nutrients to the soil, air and water.
Trophic Level
Each step in an food chain or web.
Biome
A large group of ecosystems that share the same climate and have similiar types of communties.
Biomass
The total mass of living matter at each trophic level.
Biodiversity
The variety of life in an area that is determined by the number of different species in that area.
Niche
The role or position that an organism has in it’s environment.
Symbiosis
The close relationship that exists when two or more species that live together.
Mutualism
The relationship between two or more organisms that live closely together and benefit from eachother.
Parasitism
A symbiotic relationship in which one organism benefits at the expense of another organism.
Commensalism
A relationshop in which one organism benefits and the other organism is neither helped nor harmed.
Limiting Factor
Biotic and abiotic factors that limit population size
Carrying Capacity
The amount of organisms that can be supported by the habitat.
Producer
Any organism that can produce its own food.
EX: Plants, algae, and bacteria.
Consumer
Organisms that cannot make their own food.
Decomposer
An organism that decomposes organic material.
