Ecology Flashcards
(29 cards)
Ecology
The study of organisms to one another and their environment
sunlight
light from the sun that is the source of all energy
Autotrophs / producers
organism’s that make their own food
bacteria and fungi
Heterotrophs/ consumers
organisms that eat other organisms for their food
examples dogs fish birds humans
Types of consumers
Carnivores, detrivores, omnivore, herbivore
herbivore
An animal that eats mainly plants
examples : cows, elk, sheep, mice, and buffalo
Carnivore
A animal that eats the meat of another animal
examples : lions, sharks, tigers
omnivore
Animals that eats plants and animals
Examples: pig, turtle, bears
detrivores
animals that feed on dead organism
examples: crabs, worms, and flys
decomposer
an organism that decomposes dead or decaying organic matter
examples fungi, beetles, earth worms
Biotic
Something that is living
A biotic
something that is not living
primary consumers
these are trophic level 2 and are herbivores
secondary consumers
secondary consumers are trophic level 3 and are omnivores and carnivores
tertiary consumers
these are trophic level 4 and are carnivores
quaternary consumers
these are trophic level 5 and are the top carnivores the apex predators
Biotic vs a biotic
living vs non living
symbiosis
interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
Parasitism
the practice of living as a parasite in or on another organism.
Mutualism
symbiosis that is beneficial to both organisms involved.
Commensalism
an association between two organisms in which one benefits and the other derives neither benefit nor harm.
Habitat
A habitat is a place where an organism makes its home. A habitat meets all the environmental conditions an organism needs to survive.
Niche
n ecology, the term “niche” describes the role an organism plays in a community.
prey and predator
The predator hunts animals to eat them and the prey is hunted by animals that want to eat them
