Ecology Flashcards
(27 cards)
Carrying Capacity
maximum number of species an environment can support
Symbiosis
long term relationship between 2 different species (3 types)
Mutualism (symbiosis)
benefit for both (+/+)
Commensalism (symbiosis)
benefit for one, neutral for other (+/o)
Parasitism (symbiosis)
benefit for one, costly for other (+/-)
Exponential Growth
populations growth rate stays the same regardless of population size (population grows faster as it gets larger)
Logistic Growth
population grows a lot at first, slows down as population size approaches carrying capacity
Biosphere
region of earth that encompasses all living organisms; plants, animals, bacteria
Ecosystem
group of living organisms that live/interact with eachother in a specific environment
Community
diverse group of organisms that interact in a common location
Population
organisms of same group/species that live in a specific are and can breed among themselves
Niche
role an organisms plays in a community
Herbivore
organism that only eats plants
Carnivore
organism that mostly eats meat/flesh of animals
Autotroph
organism that can produce own food using light, water, C02, other chemicals
Heterotroph
organism that eats other plants/animals for energy
Food Web
multiple food chains
Food Chain
one basic food chain
Energy Pyramid
shows how energy moves through trophic levels
10% Rule
energy passed from one trophic level to the next, only 10% of energy passed on
Succession
process by which a mix of species/habitat in an area changes overtime
Primary Succession
newly formed are is inhabited for the first time by group of species
Secondary Succession
happens when intermediate community is impacted by a disturbance
Decomposers in Ecosystem
break apart dead organisms into simpler materials (making nutrients available to primary producers)
