Ecology Flashcards
(15 cards)
Define “community”
A group of interdependent organisms that are made of different species
Define “ecosystem”
The interaction of a community with the antibiotic parts of the envoriment
What are biotic facters state two examles
Living factors in an enviorment (e.g predators, pathogens etc)
What is interdependance
a relationship that describes how all speices within a community depend on each other to survive
What are some abiotic facters state two examples
Non living factors in enviorments e.g light intensity wind and humidity
a diease causes large areas of trees to die is it biotic or abiotic factor resulting in their death
abiotic as it is a disease
briefly expalin why low light intensity may decrase animal populations
less light means less photosysmethes by plants meaning poorer growth meaning less food meaning less herbivores life. And so on throughout the food chain
state 3 biotic factors
predators pathegens competitors
What are three things animals compete for
food water mates
give one charactertic of a peacock that makes it a good competitor and state what if is competing for using the trait
behavour (mating dance) attractive colouful feathers to attract mates.
tigers urinting on trees is a behavour adaption to compete for
terrirtory
wasps build nests is a behavour adaption to compete for
space/shelter/habitat
owls sharp hearing is an adaptation to compete for
food
what do plants compete for
food water space mineral ions
Some small plants in woodlands grow only in winter and die before spring occurs suggest why
To avoid competition for sunlight when large trees grow leaves and block out sunlight.
