Ecology Flashcards
(5 cards)
How is biomass lost?
-faeces
-movement
-respiration for energy to keep warm
Describe the movement of energy through the trophic levels
1) Radiation from the sun is a source of energy for living things
2) light energy used in photosynthesis to make new biomass
3) biomass broken down via consumers providing energy for respiration enabling movement and growth
4)when organisms die biomass is broken down via decomposers putting biological molecules back in the soil, releasing co2 and heat
State the main features of a food chain-
-all begin with producers
-make own glucose
-achieved through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
What is biomass?
most sugars released by plants are used to release energy and make biological molecules which forms the biomass which is the dry mass of organic material in an organism.
How can you measure biomass?
1) dry out biomass
2) calorimetry
