Ecology Flashcards
What is a community?
The organisms living in a habitat.
What is population?
The members of a particular species living in one habitat.
What are the elements of a habitat?
Oxygen, water, temperature, light and shelter.
Name two typical prey adaptations to avoid predators.
Camouflage and a wide field of vision.
What do the arrows in a food chain show?
The flow of energy from one organism to another.
Give one reason why population can decrease.
You must have said one of these:
Increased predation
Habitat destruction
Decreased availability of food
Disease
Give one reason why population increases.
You must have said either:
Decreased predation
or
Increased availability of food.
Where do producers get their energy from and how?
Through photosynthesis from the sun.
What are secondary consumers known as?
Omnivores
What is the technical term for when one organism depends on many others for food?
The organism is interdependent.
Give one reason having multiple food sources is beneficial to the organism.
You must have said either:
If one food source decreases, there are alternatives
or
It is easier to find food from multiple sources as it saves time and energy.
What type of sampling is used to measure distribution?
Line transect
If you said Belt Transect you would be partially correct, however, that also measures the number of organisms in a quadrat as well as their distribution.
Why is it helpful to monitor population?
It gives an idea of how the population is changing over time.
What is a habitat?
A physical area where an organism can live
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
