India 1914
By 1914 India took around 20% of British total export worth £150 million.
Canada
Canada supplied upwards of 10% of Britian beef and 15% of its wheat and flour by 1914. Between 1900-1914 there was a six-fold increase in Canadian land set aside for wheat production.
Gin Trade
Large gin trade with west Africa that by 1908 was worth around 1.5 million.
Egypt cotton
Increased production of cotton in Egypt increased employment in cotton industry to four million leading to exports trebling within 10 years in Britain.
India cotton- impact on Lancashire
In 1913 India provided the Lancashire cotton mines with 40% of cotton playing a significant role in the factories and the 600,000 of brits’ jobs.
Imperial Federation League
- Set Up in 1884
- Role was to promote closer ties with empire economically
- Shut down in 1893
1902 Colonial Conferance
In 1902 there was the London Colonial Conference for leaders from Britian, the dominions of Australia, Canada and New Zealand, Cape Colony, Natal and Newfoundland to discuss creating a closer ecnonomc ties in the form of imperial customs union. Would have given a boost to imperial trade – imperial preference. Rejected by industries and voters in 1906 election by voting Liberal
Wheat imported into Britian 1894
of the 64 million hundredweight imported only 2.4 million came from empire country- Canada. The rest came predominatley from USA around 30.7 million and the rest Russia.
Foodstuff
Only cheese, apples, potatoes and fresh mutton was from Empire other foodstuff came from elsewhere with empire providing less than 10% of it.
Trade worth in 1896
Empire total trade worth £745 million in 1896 however in between countries of the empire was only £183 million representing trade with no empire countries was far greater
Empire Imports and Exports in 1913
Imports were 24.9% and exports were 37.2%
British exports in the Tropic of Africa
In 1897 the whole of the tropic of Africa only took 1.2% of British exports and over years colonies bought increasing number of exports from foreign countries rather than empire ones.
