Ecosystems Flashcards
(13 cards)
Define ECOLOGY
The study of how livings interact with their environment
Define ECOSYSTEM
Ecosystems are made up of a community of biotic (living) thing and abiotic (nonliving) things that interact with each other.
What are 5 types of ecosystems?
- Forest 🌳
2.Grassland🌱 - Aquatic🪼
- Desert🦂
- Microbial🦠
Acronym: For God, Always Dress Molly
Which is living? Biotic or Abiotic?
Biotic
Identify 4 biotic factors that make up an Ecosystem
Living-things called organisms such as bacteria, worms, birds, plants and snakes
Identify 4 abiotic factors
non-living things (such as temperature, water, soil and light) can determine which types of living things can survive in a particular area.
Draw a flow chart for the levels of organisation within an ecosystem

Explain how the Sun is the main source of energy in ecosystems.
All the energy that sustains life on Earth, from the simplest bacteria to the largest mammals, can be traced back to the Sun.
Plants, algae, and some bacteria utilize sunlight to produce their own food. During photosynthesis, they convert light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose molecules.
When plants are consumed, the energy stored in their glucose is transferred to the consumer. This energy continues to be passed through the food web as different organisms consume one another.
Define: ORGANISM
The simplest form of life. Refers to an individual life form.
Define: POPULATION
Organisms of the same species living in the same place
Define: COMMUNITY
Group of populations of different species that live and interact with each other
Identify the producers and consumers within an ecosystem
🌱The green plants which make food by photosynthesis are known as the PRODUCERS within the ecosystem.
🦁All of the animals in an ecosystem need to consume other living things as food because they cannot make their own food.
For this reason they are called CONSUMERS
