Ecosystems Flashcards
(15 cards)
Aerobic respiration
Respiration using oxygen
Anaerobic respiration
Respiration without oxygen
Respiration
Chemical reaction that occurs in cells to release energy from glucose
Limewater
A chemical that forms a white precipitate when carbon dioxide is bubbled through it
Ethanol
A type of alcohol produced in anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast
Mitochondria
Organelles found in (eukaryotic) cells that carry out aerobic respiration
Chloroplast
Organelles found in plant cells that carry out photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Chemical reaction that occurs in plant cells to produce glucose (carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen)
Chlorophyll
A green pigment in chloroplasts that absorbs light to transfer energy for photosynthesis
Starch
A large molecule made from lots of stored glucose, produced in photosynthesising plant cells
Iodine
A chemical that changes colour from brown to blue-black if starch is present
Organelle
Structures within cells that carry out a specific function, e.g. mitochondria and chloroplasts
Recovery time
The time taken for a person’s heart rate and breathing rate to return to resting levels after exercise
Oxygen debt
The amount of oxygen needed after anaerobic exercise in order to break down lactic acid
Lactic acid
A toxic waste product of anaerobic respiration in mammals. It causes muscle fatigue
