Ecosystems And People! Flashcards
(18 cards)
What does the term ‘ecosystem’ mean?
A living community of plants and animals and the environment they live in.
What does the term ‘living and non-living environments’ mean?
Living Environment examples: plants, animals, humans and bacteria.
Non- living Environment examples: Sunlight, air, water, rocks and soil.
What does the term ‘producers’ mean
Producers are the things that make their own food.
What does the term ‘decomposers’ mean?
Decomposers are the things that make things rot.
What does the term ‘herbivores’ mean?
These are animals that only eat plants. Example: horse, deer and Koala.
What does the term ‘carnivores’ mean?
These are animals that eat other animals. Examples: Bear, tiger and dog.
What does the term ‘omnivores’ mean?
These are animals or humans that eat both plants and animals. Examples: Birds, Pigs and (some) humans.
What does the term ‘food chain’ mean?
A food chain shows what eats what, and always starts with a plant. In a food chain the sun is known as the source as it is the source of all energy.
What does the term ‘Food web’ mean?
A food web is where all the plants and animals are linked together , a bit like a spiders web. There are many food chains within a food web.
What does the term ‘Biome’ mean?
A very large ecosystem.
Explain the process of Photosynthesis.
The plants roots absorb water, and it is carried to the leaves. Leaves take in carbon dioxide and release oxogen back into the atmosphere. Glucose combines with water from the soil to make the plants grow. These minerals are called nutrients.
How do food chains operate in an ecosystem??
The flow of energy from plants to animals is called a food chain. A food chain shows what eats what, and always starts with a plant. Energy trapped from the sun by the plants passes down the food chain. Energy is therefor essential to all ecosystems, because without a supply of energy, plants would die, and life could not continue. In a food chain the sun is known as the source as it is the source of all energy.
How do food webs operate in an ecosystem?
A food web is where all plants and animals are linked together, a bit like a spiders web. Energy is transferred by eating or being eaten. Each part is important, as each interacts and depends on the other parts. There is a natural balance. There are many food chains wishing a food web.
Name the earths 4 main biomes.
Hot desert.
Tropical Rainforest.
Savanna.
Deciduous Rainforest.
Name the layers of the Tropical Rainforest.
Emergent layer- Highest point of the rainforest. Understory- just above the lowest point.
Canopy- Under the highest point. Forest floor- the lowest point of the rainforest.
Describe the climate and wildlife within the Tropical Rainforest.
Climate- hot and wet all year round ( this creates a humid climate)
Wildlife- There is a wide range of diverse types of animals that live in the the rainforest from large predators like jaguars to tiny insects like ants.
What countries are orang-tans endangered? And give reasons why.
Indonesia is being deforested faster than any other county in the world (usually by burning) and it has everything to do with the product: palm oil. Two species of orange-Utah’s that are being affected by palm oil are the Sumatran Orang-utan and the Borneo Orang-utan. It is estimated that over 50 orangutan are killed every week due to deforestation. Forest homes are cleared by heavy machines or fire.
