Ecosystems Part 2 Flashcards
(10 cards)
the gradual and orderly process of change in an ecosystem leading to a climax community
Ecological Succession
occurs on an area of newly exposed rock, sand, or lava, or any area that has not been occupied previously by a living (biotic) community
Primary Succession
takes place where a community has been removed, e.g. in a plowed field or a clear-cut forest
Secondary Succession
the habitat /community that is the end result of succession: example- mature forest or a prairie (think biome)
Climax Community
the first species to appear in an ecosystem, usually mosses/lichens they produce soil
Pioneer Species
a small isolated habitat within an ecosystem or biome. A good example would be a pond or spring in the middle of a field
Microhabitat
the capacity to endure. In ecology, the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time
Sustainability
something that limits the growth of an organism or population
Limiting Factors
plant life occurring in a particular region
Flora
animal life living in a particular region
Fauna
