A

Not many children went to school as they helped out at home. Education was tied with wealth and status in the ancient world . Rich children are pushed into school all the time to maintain their dominant status in education

What was Paedagogus? What did he do?

A

A form of informal education? Practiced by the ancient greeks and later taken by the Romans. A paedag was an educated slave who would help teach a child at a very young age.

He also acted as a guardian to the child especially if the child was outdoors. Paedag could also discipline the child. This was a very debatable subject as theres a status conflict .Paedag was also expected to protect the children even at the cost of their own life

It was common for the paedag and the child to form a friendship

A

In Greece not so much but Romen, yes. According to Quintilian, women and wet nurses were encouraged to be educated so children can learn from them.

What was the Athenian education system like?

A

This system consisted of Grammata, gymnastike, mousike. Gymnatike was to keep the child in shape for their military training. Mousike is imporant as a form of education especially for nobility . Grammata was for literature such as learning about Homer and how to write/talk/read. After age 14, if the parents did not value their childrens education, they were put to work

A

Sparta did not value musical and literature education, only gymnastike and military in regards to education.

How was the Roman Education like?

A

Around age 8, a child should receive a formal education. There was Ludimasgister who was gudied by a Ludius, and Grammaticus. Ludimasgister was Basic schooling like language construction, memorization and tongue twisters (primary schooling), learning how to read and write,separating words in a inscription (ancient greek writing was all words, no breaks and no punctuation), and basic math.

Grammaticus started ata ge 12-15 (when education usually ended). They learned music, performance, philosophy, mythology, more writing etc
Music and performance was also helping for the art of public speaking

A

Yes, girls and boys both went. Girls mainly went to learn how to write a letter.

How was discipline like in schooling? How was it viewed (any criticisms against it)?

A

Corporal punishment existed in schooling. Teachers and instructors were discouraged from abusing their power to inflict corporal punishment Criticism still existed against it. The punishment did not produce results; it only taught children how not to get in trouble
The lesson may not have been learned, but only how to conceal the mistakes better.
