What is human capital?
The stock of knowledge,skills,values, habits and creativity that makes someone an economic asset to society
What is the hidden curriculum?
This means the informal learning process that happens in school it is a side effect of education that teaches students the norms and values of society
What are paticularistic values?
These are values and rules which only apply to that particular person in a given situation
What are Univeralistic Values?
This means values and rues which apply to all members of society equally
What are the four functions of education? Who made them?
-Socialisation and social solidarity- Durkheim

- Role Allocation- Davis and Moore
What is role allocation?
When the education system provides a means to selecting and shifting people into the social hierarchy.
In a meritocratic society educational achievement directly links to access to jobs
What is the bridge between family and society?
Parsons believed that school provides a link between the family and wider society allowing students to move from a status ascribed to the meritocratic wider society
What is socialisation and social solidarity?
The education system meets a functional pre-request of society by passing o the cultural and values of society.
This helps to build social solidarity as it teaches students the core values of society.
What is developing Human capital?
The investment in education benefits the wider economy.They argue that education makes sure the best and most qualified people end up in jobs that require the most skill
What is the New right view towards the role of education?
Believe that the state takes too much of a role and the free market policies would raise standards
What is the ideological state apparatus?
A social institution whose main role is to pass on the dominate ideology of the ruling class
What is repressive state apparatus?
A social institution whose role is to enforce the dominant ideology by force or threatening to use force
What is the correspondence principle?
A way in which the education system mirrors the world of work
