Q

Who experimented with the self fulfilling prophecy and what did they do?

A

Rosenthal and Jacobson demonstrated that teachers who label their students based on assumption often leads to the students internalizing these ideas and they become true, known as the self fulfilling prophecy. In a state primary school in California, they gave teachers false information about the IQ scores of students and soon the teachers treating the students in accordance with the numbers led to the numbers becoming true

A

Gillbourn and Youdel

25
What do upper- and middle-class children possess, advantaging them in the education system, according to Bourdieu?
Cultural capital
26
Describe Keddie's (1971) findings about educational achievement
Keddie applied the idea of labelling (developed by Becker) when looking at the operation of streaming in schools. 2 She found that teachers were more likely to label children from middle class backgrounds as ‘ideal pupils’ and, as a result, they tended to be treated more favourably than working class pupils. 3 Such positive labelling resulted in middle-class children being more likely to be put into the higher streams where teachers tended to have higher expectations of the students, whereas the working class students in the lower streams were treated more negatively and were more likely to have higher level knowledge withheld from them.
27
How do liberal femenists see the progression of gender equality?
Liberal feminists suggest that although some progress has been made through legislation, there are still some laws that discriminate against women.
28
How does labelling affect students?
The way teachers label pupils can influence a number of factors, including pupil identities and, ultimately, achievement.
29
Internal factors (inside the school) affecting female educational achievement:
More emphasis on equal opportunities for girls 2 Encouraging girls into once male-dominated subjects 3 Drives to reduce gender stereotyping in the classroom
30
Do middle-class or working-class parents place less value on education, according to Sugarman?
WC parents
31
Ball and Youdell distinguish between:
Privatisation in education (endogenous privatisation) 2 Privatisation of education (exogenous privatisation)
32
What did gillbourn and Youdel do and when?
Educational triage (2000)
33
Ball and Youdell distinguish between:
Privatisation in education (endogenous privatisation) 2 Privatisation of education (exogenous privatisation)
