Education - Ethnicity & Achievement (Internal Factors) Flashcards

Q

SOCIOLOGIST: What did Gillborn & Youdell say about Black pupils & discipline regarding to labelling & teacher racism?

A

Teachers are quicker to discipline black pupils than others for the same behaviour due to their ‘racialised expectations’ of them. They expected black pupils too present more discipline problems & often misinterpreted their behaviour as threatening or to challenge authority. They concluded that much of the conflict between white teachers and black students stems from racial stereotypes rather than their actual behaviour

Q

SOCIOLOGIST: Due to this, what does Bourne say that this can affect black boys?

A

May explain the high exclusion rate of black boys which heavily effects their own achievement -> 1 in 5 excluded pupils succeed 5 GCSEs
Black students are also more likely to be placed in lower sets/streams due to these negative stereotypes about their ability.

Q

SOCIOLOGIST: What was the Fuller’s study on pupil responses & subcultures?

A

Studied a group of year 11 black girls from a comprehensive school in London, who were high achievers. Found that the girls channelled their anger about being labelled into pursuing educational success & didn’t seek the teacher’s approval, as well as, only conforming to the school as far as schoolwork was concerned and showed a lack of consideration for the school routines. The girl’s behaviour was seen as a way of dealing with the contradictory demands of succeeding at school whilst still being freinds with black girls from lower streams.

Q

What is a criticism of Fuller’s study as pointed out by Mirza?

A

Much of the girl’s time in the study was spent trying to avoid the negative effects of the teacher’s attitudes which ultimately left them disadvantaged as they missed out on opportunities as a result.

Q

SOCIOLOGIST: What does Coard say about the ethnocentric curriculum?

A

The national curriculum reflects the culture of the dominant culture (UK). For example, In England, Asian languages, music & literature isnt taught but European languages are.

17
Q

SOCIOLOGIST: What does Ball say about history in the ethnocentric curriculum?

A

Ethnic diversity is ignored & they criticise it for promoting ‘little Englandism’

18
Q

How does the ethnocentric curriculum link to the achievement of ethnic minorities?

A

In history, the British are presented as bringing civilisation to the ‘primitive’ people they colonised. He argues that this image of black people as inferior undermines black children’s self esteem & ultimately leads to their failure

19
Q

What is a criticism of the ethnocentric curriculum?

A

Not clear of its impact. Although Asian culture is ignored & not taught, Indian & Chinese pupil’s achievement is above average
