EEEE2055: Multivariable Techniques Flashcards
(5 cards)
1
Q
What is a scalar field?
A
- A scalar field is a scalar function of spatial coordinates
- It gives a scalar value at each coordinate
2
Q
Give an example of a vector field that occurs in Engineering.
A
- Electric Field
- Magnetic Field
3
Q
What is meant by an orthogonal coordinate system?
A
- In 3D space, point can be located as intersection three coordinate surfaces.
- If three surfaces are mutually perpendicular to each other, it is a system of orthogonal coordinates
4
Q
State the three families of surfaces for an orthogonal coordinate system
A
- u = constant
- v = constant
- w = constant
5
Q
What is a vector field
A
- An assignment of a vector to each point in space
- A given magnitude and direction is attached to a point in space
