Efficient Cause Flashcards
(15 cards)
Efficient Cause
a principle from which motion firstly originates in the order of execution
Order of execution
order by which actions are carried out in reality (ex: buying train tickets before riding train)
Order of Intention
order by which things are planned or thought of (planning railway journey precedes buying train ticket)
Principal Efficient Cause
Efficient cause which operates on its own nature. Production is proportionate to its own nature
Instrumental Efficient Cause
Efficient cause which must be used by another efficient cause to produce effect beyond its proportionate power
Example of principle and Instrumental efficient cause together
principal = writer
instrumental = pen
effect = intelligible writing (beyond power of pen w/o writer to move it and make letters)
1st Principal Efficient Cause
doesn’t depend on anything else to cause something proportionate to its nature on its own power
Secondary Principal Efficient Cause
needs help of another cause to make effect proportionate to its power
Transitive act
act which begins in agent and finishes outside of it. (Action in strict sense of word)
Immanent act
begins in agent and finishes inside it. Perfects the agent which acts Ex) thinking and willing in living beings.
Static order
1 of 2 orders to which being belongs. Simply as existing independent of any activity, what makes being to be formally being
Precedes dynamic: can’t act if you first don’t exist
-includes reception of existence of substance and existence of operative potencies
Dynamic order
1 of 2 orders to which being belongs. Being precisely as an agent, it acts
-includes activity of agent
Operative Potencies
immediate and proximate principle of activity
Are contingent beings proximate/immediate or mediate principles? Why?
Contingent beings themselves are mediate principles because they act through the medium that is operative potencies to bring about an effect.
-Contingent beings are not operative potencies themselves or else we would be able to see even though we are blind.
What are the 3 stages being goes through to reach its fullness?
1) receives its existence (static order)
2) operative powers come into existence (static order)
3) by activity of agent (dynamic order; absolutely)
