India was the jewel in the crown of the British Empire.
As well as spices, jewels and textiles, India had a huge population. Soldiering was an honourable tradition in India and the British capitalised on this. They regimented India’s manpower as the backbone of their military power.

Some English merchants started the eic in 1600. they started trading in bases at Bombay madras and Calcutta. The company was not Interested in taking over land. The death of the Mughal emperor auragezb led to a power vacuum. Wars broke out. The eic helped the prince win the battles in return they were alouwed to trade with them. If they failed to keep the side of the deal the eic would take over. This is how the eic took over large areas of India
