U2 crisis
1st May 1962 - U2 spy plane shot down and Gary Powers is shown on international television.
Hungarian Revolution (1956)
.Hungary wanted to replace Rakosi with Imre Naggy
.Nov- Khrushchev sends tanks to Budapest
.Janos Kadar is appointed leader and tasked with crushing the rebellion
.Eisenhower claims that this is not covered by the Truman Doctrine
Space Race
.Oct 4th 1957- USSR put sputnik into space
.6th Dec 1957- USA launch Kaputnik which explodes 4ft off the ground

5th Jan 1957. It was seen as trying to Westernize the east and extremely transparent
What was the “new look” policy?
A cost effective approach which involved increasing the USA’s military arsenal - “more bang for your buck”
How many nuclear weapons did the USA and USSR have by 1957?
The US had 5543, the USSR had 650.
Suez crisis
.July 1956- Nasser nationalised the canal
.Britain and France made a deal with Israel to invade Egypt but Eisenhower did not support this and threatened them with financial repercussions
