French word meaning “types or kinds”
Non-fiction
Based on facts and meant to teach us about a topic. Also known as informational text.
ex: article on dolphins, a book about railroads, a cookbook on how to make desserts
Non-fiction: Biography
story of someone’s life written by another ex. justin bieber’s life by John D
Non-fiction: Autobiography
story of someone’s life, writtenj by THEM ex. Derek Jeter’s life by Jeter
FICTION
(Fake) - stories with characters, settings, and /or conflicts that are made-up by the author
Fiction: Fantasy
Story with imaginative elements like talking animals or magical powers (ex Harry Potter)
Fiction: Mystery
S suspenseful story about a puzzling event that is solved by following a set of clues
(ex. 39 clues)
Fiction: Realistic Fiction
Story that describes events that could happen (ex. Diary of a Wimpy kid)
Fiction: Historical Fiction
Story with fictional characters that takes place during earlier times in history (Milly and the macy’s day parade)
Fiction: Science Fiction
Story based on future technology with scientific fact and fiction (the jetsons)
Fiction: Fable
Story that teaches a moral lesson; usually involves animals (ex Tortoise and the hare)
Fiction: Folktale
Story, often with a message, that was passed down by word of mouth (Hansel & Gretel)
Fiction: Myth
Story that explains how something in nature was passed down by word of mouth

Fiction: Tall Tale
story that has a lot of exaggeration it is shared like it is true but has many parts that are unbelievable (Paul Bunyan)
Fiction: Poetry
A verse written that inspires thought Lyrics and rhyme are sometimes included
Fiction: Drama
Stories usually written in acts where conflicts and emotions are expressed through dialogue and action
