What is figurative language?
Figurative language is a type of literary device
Personification
When a non-human thing is given human attributes…described as if it is a person ( As the wind blew, the tree waved its branches with pride.)
Allusion
To refer to a book, play, movie, song, or other work people are likely to be familiar with as a way to help make a point/explain an idea. ( This new job is my golden ticket! - alludes to Charlie and the chocolate factory )
Hyperbole
Overstatement, a figure of speech that uses exaggeration for emphasis ( I died laughing! )
Simile
A comparison stating that something is LIKE or AS something else ( She was as busy as a bee. )
Metaphor
A comparison stating that something IS something else ( The close friends were two peas in a pod )
Alliteration
A series of words that begin with the same consonant sound ( Dad taught me all about baseball, birds nest, brigands, and butterflies. )
Idiom
An expression that has a different, ( non literal ) meaning than it’s literal meaning ( that video game costs an arm and a leg )
Onomatopoeia
A Word that sounds like, resembles, or suggests the sound that it describes ( buzz, slap, hum, chirp )
Infer
To deduce, conclude, or determine ( something ) from evidence and reasoning rather than from direct or explicit statements, ( read between the lines )
Clarify
To make a statement or a situation less confusing, easier to understand by explaining or giving more details.
