Q

Where is the elbow joint capsule weakest and strongest?

A

Weak anteriorly and posteriorly

strengthened on the side by ligaments

1
Q

What are the clinically important bursae of the elbow joint?

A

intratendinous olecranon bursa: sometimes present in the tendon of triceps brachii
subtendinous olecranon bursa: located between the olecranon and the triceps tendon
subcutaneous olecranon olecranon bursa: located in the subcutaneous connective tissue over the olecranon.
bicipitoradial bursa: separates the biceps tendon from the anterior part of the radial tuberosity

2
Q

What are the ligaments that strengthen the elbow joint?

A

laterally: radial collateral ligament extends from the lateral epicondyle of the humerus and blends distally with the anular ligament of the radius
medially: ulnar collateral ligament extends from the medial epicondyle of the humerus to the coronoid process and olecranon of the ulna (It consists of three bands)

3
Q

What are the three bands of the ulnar collateral ligament?

A

anterior cord-like band is the strongest
the posterior fan-like band is the weakest
the slender oblique band deepens the socket for the trochlea of the humerus

4
Q

What supplies and innervates the elbow joint?

A

The elbow joint is supplied by anastomoses of arteries around the elbow joint
the elbow joint is innervated by the musculocutaneous, radial, and ulnar nerves

5
Q

What type of joint is the elbow?

A

synovial hinge
