Poetry
Poetry often tells a story or conveys a message
Poets often use the following devices in their writing:
figurative language
rhyme scheme
and different sound devices
Poets use these elements to help create mood and convey a central theme
These poetic devices also make a poem memorable
Rhyme
Rhyme is the repetition of sounds at the end of words
Words rhyme when their accented vowels and the letters that follow then create identical or similar sounds.
Rhyme Scheme
Rhyme scheme is a pattern of end rhymes in a poem
A rhyme scheme is noted by assigning a letter of the alphabet
The first letter assigned is “a”
Any word that rhymes with the end word of the first line will also be marked “a”
The next line after the first line that does not rhyme with the first line will be “b”
Any words that have the same rhyming end of lines will get the same letter
Mood
mood is the feeling the poem creates for the reader.
Alliteration
Repetition of beginning consonant sounds in a word
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in non-rhyming words
Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds within and at the end of words
Repetition
Restating the same word or phrases, or the same grammatical constructions
Reasons to Rhyme?
To create a musical quality
To emphasize sounds that suggest a particular feeling such as;
surprise or sadness
To create rhythms, or patterns of stressed and unstressed syllables
Why do you think the poet repeats these words?(lines 3-6)
