what is an AVR / MVR

A

An AVR is an aortic valve replacement, an MVR is a mitral valve replacement it is a type of open heart surgery required when a valve is diseased. This may be due to narrowing of the valve (stenosis) or leaking (regurgitation). A mid-sternotomy is performed to expose the heart and patient is placed on cardio-pulmonary bypass.

Complications?

A

Infection, clotting, stroke, arrhythmia, damage to valve

Physio post op?

A

Deep breathing exercsies
early mobilisation
Pain controlled -> exercises to gradually build up strength

Other Rx: anticoagulants, antibiotics, ventilator until satisfactory breathing is achieved, pain medication
