Electrical Flashcards
(15 cards)
Voltage
Difference in electrical potential between two points (no change in load)
Current
Flow of electric charge; dependent on load
Frequency
Cycles/Sec; US is 60 Hz
Apparent Power
Power is the rate that energy is moved
Difference between real and apparent power?
Real is what we consume and apparent is what we demand
Leading pf
Current leading voltage; capacity; CAPACITY TO LEAD (electric)
Lagging pf
Current lagging voltage: Inductive: INDUCED LAG (magnetic)
Impedance
The opposition a circuit presents to current
Why do we have transformers?
To transfer to one voltage to another
What does less current mean in terms of voltage?
Less voltage drop over a distance and a more efficient power transfer
What are the sources of primary energy used in power plants?
Coal, Nuclear, Natural Gas, Hydro
What are the key components on the path from power plant to facilities?
Power Plant (Generation), Transmission Lines, Power Substation, Distribution
Looped v Radial System Configurations?
Looped - redundancy and isolation of faults (GOAL)
Radial - simple and cheap
Overhead Distribution Advantages/Disadvantages
Adv: Less expensive, easy access, straightforward
Disadv: Obstructions
Underground Distribution Advantages and Disadvantages
Adv: Hidden, Less exposed, more capacitance
Disadv: Expensive, Digging hazard
